Leadership is about crafting an optimistic vision for the future.
We both share a vision that Vermont is on the verge of a major renewal. Families will stay or return here to make their homes and educate their children. Entrepreneurs will start and successfully grow innovative businesses. Rural areas will thrive with affordable housing, jobs close to home, and transportation. And all Vermonters will do our part to restore our waterways and reduce our contributions to climate change.
This renewal will come when our government works with citizens just like you to solve our common challenges with affordable, actionable solutions. Like us, Vermonters want to make improvements, and will respond to incentives, encouragement, and support rather than punitive measures.

We will go to Montpelier on your behalf with your ideas and our principles guiding our decisions.
Here are our principles, what we stand for, and believe in:
- We will encourage inclusiveness and participation. This starts with listening to our constituents and working to understand your concerns. This principle is at the heart of being independent. We need to consider social, economic, and geographic differences to understand the complete picture of any complex issue.
- We respect and understand the unique conditions of rural Vermont. What makes sense for the population centers may not work in other areas of the state.
- We recognize that, to most Vermonters, affordability and the cost of living in Vermont are of everyday concern.
- We believe we must keep farms and forests working in our state to preserve our rural identity and the landscape that Vermonters and visitors appreciate so much.
- We believe that fiscal constraint is a discipline that needs constant attention. Sometimes events overtake us–like Hurricane Irene or the opioid epidemic–and we recognize that Vermonters need to respond.
- We believe overwhelmingly that optimism, hope, and clear aspirations will inspire us to find the best solutions for all Vermonters.
